Back pain

Back pain is a common problem for many people, often presenting as a result of an acute injury such as direct trauma in sports, or whiplash injury in a road traffic accident. Back pain may also be due to poor postural alignment or degeneration in the spine.

Musculoskeletal conditions affecting the back include:

  • Prolapsed disc
  • Slipped disc
  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Whiplash

Physiotherapy for back pain includes manual therapy and exercises to increase core stability. Treatment aims to reduce back pain, increase strength and restore normal function. Postural advice and exercises are also important for rehabilitation.

Neck pain

Similarly to back pain, neck pain can result from acute injury, poor postural alignment and degeneration in the cervical spine. Other symptoms accompanying neck pain may include reduced movement of the neck, headaches, referred pain into the back/shoulders, dizziness and loss of balance.

Physiotherapy can help many neck complaints including:

  • Whiplash
  • Neck stiffness
  • Post fracture
  • Postural syndrome
  • Torticollis

Manual therapy teamed with a home exercise programme at Ian Rodgerson Physiotherapy can help to eliminate your neck pain and allow you to return to normal function/sport.

  • Dislocation
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Rotator cuff disorders

Hip pain

Various conditions can affect the hip joint resulting in pain, limiting daily activities such as sitting, standing, walking and getting in and out of bed. We understand how disabling hip pain can be. Conditions affecting the hip joint include arthritis, bursitis and fractures of the femoral head.

Physiotherapy can help to manage or resolve pain through various techniques such as joint mobilisation, exercise therapy and orthotic assessment. The treatment plan for hip pain will vary depending on your condition and will be made individual to you to meet your goals.

Knee pain

Our specialist physiotherapists frequently assess, diagnose and treat knee pain. Many structures in and around the knee joint may cause pain, swelling and inflammation, leading to reduction in function and weakening of surrounding muscles.

Physiotherapy can help you return to daily functional activities such as walking, climbing stairs and standing from a chair.

Physiotherapy techniques for knee pain include:

  • Deep soft tissue massage
  • Patella mobilisations
  • Exercise rehabilitation
  • Biomechanical gait analysis

Sports specific rehabilitation training can also help you get back into training and competitive level with confidence.

Foot and ankle pain

Direct trauma, repetitive trauma or biomechanical abnormalities, such as flat feet, are the main causes of foot and ankle pain. Foot and ankle injuries can happen to anyone; but runners, footballers and dancers are more susceptible to injury than others.

Common foot and ankle injuries include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ligament sprain
  • Stress fractures
  • Achilles tendon pain

Our physiotherapists will assess you to determine the exact cause of the problem and form a diagnosis. The specific diagnosis and the goals you would like to achieve will determine a treatment plan devised by your therapist, individual to you. Treatment may include manual therapy, exercise prescription, biomechanical assessment and orthotic correction.

Muscle and ligament injury

Muscle and ligament injuries can happen to anyone through direct or repetitive trauma. Muscle and ligament injuries fit into 2 categories: a muscle strain or a ligament sprain. A strain or sprain occurs when a muscle or ligament is overstretched or torn. Your physiotherapist will be able to assess and diagnose your specific injury following a subjective and physical examination.

Strains and sprains lead to pain and inflammation; leading to muscle weakness and joint instability. Physiotherapy advice and treatment is important in managing muscle and ligament injuries correctly. Our physiotherapists take a rehabilitation approach of hands on techniques and exercise prescription, allowing you to return to every day function free of pain.

At Ian Rodgerson Physiotherapy, treatment for whiplash includes:

  • Advice to decrease pain and inflammation
